In various past blog posts we have discussed the water contamination case of the Ogeechee River. But that river isn’t alone in being a poor example of respect for Georgia’s water resources. In fact, there are so many areas of environmental concern that a group called The Georgia Water Coalition has created a list of what it calls the “Dirty Dozen” bodies of water in the state.
The following are just some of the other bodies of water in Georgia that have made the environmental group’s list. The water contamination that killed thousands of fish makes Ogeechee River number one on the list:
- The South River makes number two on the list due to problems of hazardous waste in the water.
- The Chattahoochee River makes number seven on the list due to supposed failure to create the necessary water flow at Atlanta.
- Allen Creek makes number nine on the list due to water contamination supposedly caused by landfill operators.
These are just a small portion of the announced “Dirty Dozen.” The Georgia Water Coalition attributes much of the water pollution problems to the idea that business is given more respect than environmental friendliness by some in the state.
The passion behind the Ogeechee River lawsuit will hopefully open up businesses’ and lawmakers’ eyes to the responsibilities that they owe to the environment. There are cleaner alternatives to some of the processes that are putting the state’s water at risk. Until eyes are opened and processes are changed, many environmental law fights are yet to come in the state of Georgia.
